Fergusons from the Ross of Mull

country: Canada

comments: I am hoping to trace the Scottish origins of Hugh Ferguson (1759-1841) and his wife Ann McKinnon (born ~1780), who emigrated with their family from Scotland (Tobermory, Isle of Mull) to Canada in 1832, with their 5 sons and 3 daughters.

They lived in Markham Township (Ontario) from 1832-1834, and then settled in Mariposa Township, Victoria County (Ontario) in 1834.

I have been able to establish with some certainty that, prior to immigrating to Canada, this family may have lived near Bunessan on Mull. I have obtained records for 7 Ferguson children (Donald, Alexander, Flora, Lachlan, Marrion, Catherine and Duncan) who were christened in the Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon parish between 1805 and 1824. Donald, Alexander, Flora and Catherine accompanied their parents to Canada; the others may have died very young in Scotland.

From another source, I have learned that there was a Duncan Ferguson (1800-1882) who was a leader of the Baptist congregation at Bunessan, and an Alexander Ferguson (1790-1833) who was the minister of a Tobermory parish church. I am trying to determine if they were directly related to Hugh Ferguson, who was my great, great, great, great grandfather.

There is also a Neil Ferguson (~1771-1837) buried at the Calgary Cemetery on the Isle of Mull, who may also be related to Hugh Ferguson (possibly brothers?).

If you have any information on these Fergusons, I would be very grateful for your help.

Robert Ferguson
